Blessing Another

Over the past weeks, parents/guardians of High School Seniors, as well as our staff, have prepared for and taken part in our annual “Senior Blessing”. What does blessing others look like in this annual event as well as daily living?

Through the preparation over the past weeks, I have been reminded of a few things.

We see this concept of bless/blessing in the entirety of the Scriptures, OT and NT. Granted, there are different focuses (and original words used) with the intention of the blessing, in general, we can describe this as a pronunciation of God’s favor, extensions of His grace.

Whether it be Abraham in Genesis 12 (related to provisions such as a family lineage and a new land, or the greater eternal provision in hope for the life to come), Jacob in Genesis 27 (continuing provision through his lineage), or Jesus in Mark 10 (blessing children, expressing their value to those watching), all are demonstrations of God’s covenant commitment and expressions of His grace towards His people.

In looking in the NT, being reminded of who we are in Christ, consider Ephesians 1:3-14, which starts in verse 3 with, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places”. Christ is our reference point for the most significant blessing we have received, himself, and in turn our reference point for blessing others!

With the previous definitions and examples, we take this into the lives of young people to ask how might we continue blessing them to extend our (and the Lord’s) favor in these meaningful ways. How about the following:

  • What are significant moments in the lives of young people to bless them with reminders of our provision in Christ? This can actually be a daily thing, but there are meaningful milestones to consider doing the same, publicly, with others who are journeying with them.
  • Moments to consider: the profession of faith, baptism, transition to elementary school, transition from elementary school to intermediate/middle school, transition from middle school to high school, consistent display of Christ-like character, significant achievements along the way, etc.
  • Use meaningful touch, eye contact, thoughtful words, Scriptures that highlight Christ-like character, keep Christ in front of them as to who to fix their eyes on, and include your commitment to journey with them; all as factors to express a blessing to them. (note: see theblessing.com for additional guidance)

Take time to think through how you might bless young people around you, making it a pattern of life, so that they know they are of great value to you and the Lord!
